Upon rebooting, Windows 7 reinstalled a generic "High Definition Audio Device" driver, and now I have my sound back! On my laptop I eventually found I had to go to the volume mixer while the video was running on Chrome. Hard to say which as tried them all. try start-control panel-sounds right click the entry "speakers" and select "set as default".
